We are a grassroots group pushing for fairer elections for Austin City Council. We are dedicated to Austin having city council elections in geographic districts, which are fairly and impartially drawn. Our goal is simple: Let the people draw the maps and let our neighbors, not the campaign contributors, run the show!
Austin’s civic, political, and neighborhood organizations have met since March, 2011 to develop, agree to, and spread the word about the Citizens Districting 10-1 plan for geographic representation on the Austin city council (CD10-1):
- Ten, geographically local, city council districts,
- Drawn up by a non-partisan, independent, citizen’s redistricting commission,
- With the mayor still elected at-large.
During our successful petition drive we gathered 33,000 signatures which forced the CD10-1 plan onto the November, 2012 ballot. We campaigned hard for passage of Prop 3 as an amendment to the city charter. The citizens of Austin responded powerfully and overwhelmingly approved Proposition 3 as the best way for Austin to have fair geographic districts.
After the election our coalition stayed together to monitor and assure that Citizens Districting 10-1 is implemented fairly, efficiently, and in a timely manner. The next goal is to ensure city elections in November, 2012 are held under CD10-1. Our first post election action was to from the “AGR CD10-1 Advisory Committee.”
A large and growing number of groups and individuals agree the CD10-1 plan is right for Austin
We are a consensus based organization, formalized only as a Political Action Committee whose purposes are to advance geographic representation in general, and to assure Austin holds elections in November, 2014 under the Citizens Districting 10-1 plan.
